The 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry mustered in at Milwaukee. Also, on this day in 1864, the 19th Wisconsin Infantry fought a skirmish in New Bern, North Carolina.
1922 - Packers Expelled from APFA
On this date the Green Bay Packers were expelled from the American Professional Football Association (APFA) for using three Notre Dame players, under assumed names, in a non-league game against Racine the previous December. Despite the use of the illegal players, the Packers tied Racine 3-3 in this state championship. The Packers were allowed to returned to the league before the next season. On this date Governor Philip F. La Follette signed into law a groundbreaking unemployment insurance bill. Wisconsin was the first state to approve unemployment compensation. This action became a model for other states developing similar legislation.
1959 - Lombardi Named Packers Coach
On this date Vince Lombardi was named head coach of the Packers. He had been the offensive backfield coach of the New York Giants for the previous five seasons. Lombardi went on to coach the Packers for nine years, winning five NFL Championships and victories in Super Bowls I and II. [Source: Packers.com]
