The 4th Wisconsin Infantry completed the expedition into Accomac County, Virginia.

1906 - Elizabeth Hawkes Born

On this date Elizabeth Hawkes was born in Washburn, Wisconsin. After graduating from George Washington University Law School, Hawkes was admitted to the Wisconsin bar in 1937. She served as a court commissioner and as the Bayfield County District Attorney for one term.  Hawkes was designated as a member of the State Democratic Committee for 20 consecutive years and as a delegate to the National Democratic Conventions five times.  She was also a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Wisconsin. Hawkes played an important role at the University of Wisconsin as a member of the U.W. Board of Regents, on which she served a term as president of the Board. Hawkes continued to work until her death on Feb. 8, 1978. [Source: Wisconsin Bar]
