1865 - (Civil War) Battle of Spanish Fort, Alabama, ends
While the main Union army was chasing Robert E. Lee across Virginia, other Union forces, including the 8th, 11th, 14th, 20th, 23rd, 27th, 28th, 29th, 33rd, and 35th Wisconsin Infantry regiments, captured Spanish Fort and seized control of Mobile Bay, Alabama.
1905 - First High School Basketball Tournament

1939 - Gov. Martin Schreiber Born
On this date Martin James Schreiber was born in Milwaukee. Schreiber studied at Valparaiso University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before getting a law degree from Marquette University. During law school he was elected and twice reelected to the state senate. In 1970 Schreiber was elected lieutenant governor under Patrick Lucey.
