On this date the first group of elected Dane County Commissioners met to select their officers. At their first meeting, convened at the Madison Hotel, the following individuals were selected to serve as county officials: Lafayette Kellogg, county clerk; John Stoner, county treasurer; William Wheeler, county assesser; R.L. 1848 - First Public Hospital Founded in Milwaukee
On this date St. John's Infirmary was founded in Milwaukee. The Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul provided direction and nursing. This infirmary was Wisconsin's first public hospital. [Source: History Just Ahead: A Guide to Wisconsin's Historical Markers, edited by Sarah Davis McBride]
1864 - (Civil War) Battle of Resaca, Georgia
On May 15th, the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry repulsed a charge by an entire division of the enemy. Even their chaplain took up arms and fought for several hours. He was among the three soldiers from the 3rd Infantry who were killed that day.
1911 - Janesville Prohibits Fortune Tellers

1920 - State Sen. and Congressman Lynn Stalbaum Born
On this date, Lynn Ellsworth Stalbaum was born on a farm near Waterford, Wisconsin. After working with the United States Department of Agriculture in Racine County from 1936 to 1944, he served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. After WWII, Stalbaum was elected to the State senate in 1954 and re-elected in 1958 and 1962. He was elected to the 89th Congress (January 3, 1965-January 3, 1967) and served as legislative consultant to rural electric and dairy cooperatives from 1968 to 1985. He lived in Bethesda, Maryland until his death on June 17, 1999. [Source: Biographical Directory of the U.S. Congress].
1938 - Congressman William A. Steiger Born
On this date, William Albert Steiger was born in Oshkosh. After receiving a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1960, Steiger was elected to the State assembly and was reelected in 1962, 1964, and 1966. He was elected as a Republican to the 90th Congress and to the six succeeding Congresses, serving in Washington from January 3, 1967 until his death on December 4, 1978 in Washington, D.C.
