1836 - Wisconsin Territory Formed

On this date the Wisconsin Territory was formed by an act of the Michigan Legislature. Brown County lost a portion of its original possession north of the Menominee River but gained the remainder of the eastern peninsula. Territorial officials were sworn on July 4th of the same year.  [Source: Sussex-Lisbon Area Historical Society]

1863 - (Civil War) Second day of Battle of Stones River, Tennessee

The Battle of Stones River entered its second day near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The 1st, 10th, 15th, 21st and 24th Wisconsin Infantry regiments and 3rd, 5th, 8th, and 10th Wisconsin Light Artillery batteries took part. About 41,000 Union soldiers faced off against 38,000 Confederates in driving rain, sleet, and fog. The bravery of the 10th led one general to comment that they "would have suffered extermination rather than have yielded their ground without orders."

1905 - Milwaukee Interurban Terminal Opens

On this date the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Co. opened the Milwaukee Interurban Terminal. At one time, the system extended west to Madison, north to Sheboygan, and south to Kenosha. [Source: History Just Ahead: A Guide to Wisconsin's Historical Markers by Sarah Davis McBride, p.29]

1908 - Photographer H.H. Bennett Dies

Pioneering landscape photographer H.H. Bennett (1843-1908) died in Wisconsin Dells. His images were distributed around the nation, often as stereoscope views, and did much to promote early tourism in the Dells. 1953 - Badgers Lose in Rose Bowl

On this date University of Wisconsin lost to Southern California, 7-0, in the 39th Rose Bowl.  The Badgers were selected to play in the Rose Bowl after tying Purdue for the Big Ten championship.  [Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]

1960 - Badgers Defeated in Rose Bowl

On this date the University of Washington Huskies crushed the University of Wisconsin Badgers 44-8 in the Rose Bowl.  The embrassing defeat occurred despite the fact that the Badger defense had allowed on average only 10 points per game throughout the season. [Source:]

1986 - Uniform Marital Property Act Adopted

On this date the Uniform Marital Property Act took effect. This law states that there is equal ownership of any assets acquired during the course of a marriage. Wisconsin was the first state to enact such legislation. [Source: Marquette Law Scholarly Commons]
