Baraboo women launch a raid on town saloons
A Bottle Smashing Crusader of Wisconsin
Years before militant temperance crusader Carrie Nation became well-known for her violent attacks on Kansas saloons, the women of Baraboo launched a raid on town taverns, destroying all the bottles, barrels, and kegs of beer and whiskey. Warrants were issued for the women's arrest but in the end, the judge ruled in favor of the town's women. The last surviving member of the raid, Mary Hartwell, recalls the event in this article.
