Governor Lewis announces the founding of a Soldiers' Home, 1865
The Wisconsin soldiers' home The state of Wisconson ... A proclamation ... Done at the Capitol, in the City of Madison, this 19th day of April, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-five.
In this broadside Governor James T. Lewis issued a proclamation in 1865 concerning the incorporation of a Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee. Lewis announced that the Legislature had appropriated some money to aid in its support, and he called on citizens to hold a state fair in order to raise the rest of the money necessary to build it.
