John Trowbridge's poem about Darius Green, a teenager who wondered "Birds can fly, An' why can't I?" was not published in book form until 1910 although it had been written over 40 years earlier and it had been well known from that time on. Trowbridge's description of Darius' flying machine (later given charming expresssion by illustrator Wallace Goldsmith) was unquestionably shaped by the popular, pre-Wright Brothers notion of what a flying-machine should look like. |
