Flying School | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
A ground school conducted by Princeton University for students who wished to enlist in the Army Air Service. During World War I most American aviators were college students, although the best known flyer, Eddie Rickenbacker, was not. Here an Air Service officer demonstrates the correct way to start the propeller on a trainer airplane. The Curtiss JN-4, or Jenny, as it was commonly known, was used for training in the United States, but not for combat.
