Astronaut Alan Shepard (second from the left), then the head of NASA's astronaut office, talks with the press at Cape Canaveral before the Gemini 8. On April 14, 1961, Shepard became the first American to travel in space. His flight, which was broadcast to a nervous nation, was sub-orbital, and it lasted only 15 minutes--not too much longer than the Wright Brothers' longest flight in 1903. Later an inner ear disturbance removed Shepard from flight status, but after surgery he was able to command Apollo 14 and walk on the moon.
