Fire Company
| A lithographic portrait by Louis Kurz (1833-1921) of Madison Fire Engine Company #2 posed with a hand pumper and hose cart in front of the design of the new, but as yet unbuilt, Wisconsin State Capitol by architects August Kutzbock and Samuel H. Donnel. Because the new (third) Capitol was destroyed by fire in 1904, this is a somewhat ironic pairing. On the right is Station #2, 125 State Street, which was built in 1857. This building still stands although greatly altered by the Castle & Doyle Coal Co. facade. This volunteer fire company was composed of German-American residents. The man in the central foreground is Martin Hinrichs. To his right is George Armbrecht. The first man from the left in the first row was the father of Matt Zwank of Madison. Third from the left is John Whistler, a pioneer market owner. At the extreme left in the second row from the front is Richard Baus, who operated a cigar store where the Maw-Olson store now stands. To the right of Mr. Baus is Joseph Hausmann, who was a brewer. In the fourth row back, to the left of the flag, is a man named Kessler. One of the two torch boys in the left foreground is believed to be John B. Heim, former mayor of Madison. |
