ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
According to Dick Schnering of the Cassville Historical Society, this colorized drawing of Cassville in 1829 began life as a pencil sketch by Seth Eastman, who passed Cassville that year on his way to Prairie du Chien to report for duty as a soldier at Fort Crawford. Eastman drew this picture along with many other river subjects while stationed in Prairie du Chien; it is reproduced as plate #56 in "Seth Eastman's Mississippi: A Lost Portfolio Recovered" (Urbana, University of Illinois Press, 1973), and Eastman's original is in the St. Louis Art Museum. Henry Lewis used Eastman's picture on his great rolling mural of the Mississippi River, around 1850.
