ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
He moved from New York State to Dodge County, Wisconsin in 1857 at the age of 21. He served at two different times during the U.S. Civil War, with two different Union units. Hoard initially taught music, but soon went on to become a newspaper man, serving as Editor of the weekly "Jefferson City Union." Hoard, described as the "apostle of the dairy cow, founded "Hoard's Dairyman - The National Dairy Farm Magazine" in 1885. He played a major role in Wisconsin's shift from a wheat-based agricultural economy to dairying. In 1888 Hoard was nominated as the Republican candidate for Wisconsin governor. He was elected and served one term, during which he pioneered the fight against food adulteration. Hoard also served as President of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents for a time, and at the World's Fair in San Francisco in 1915, he was named "Wisconsin's Most Distinguished Citizen."
