State Street Looking Toward Wisconsin State Capitol
View up State Street looking toward the Wisconsin State Capitol from the roof of University Hall (later Bascom Hall), about 1860 or 1861. Actually the photograph captures two Capitols: the first Capitol is the facade facing State Street, while the new, larger building then under construction can be seen behind it. Bruen's Block (built 1853) is to the left of the Capitol; to the right are the Vilas House, (built 1853), Grace Episcopal Church (completed 1858), First Baptist Church (dedicated 1854), Wells' Block , and the Dane County Courthouse. Lake Monona is visible at the top of the image. |
