James Buchanan

James Buchanan | Print | Wisconsin Historical Society
A head and shoulders portrait of James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States, 1857-1861. Buchanan was born in Cove Gap near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania on April 23, 1791 and died on June 1, 1868 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The only President who never married, he had a long career in public service prior to the presidency, serving 5 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving as Minister to Russia, then a decade in the U.S. Senate, Polk's Secretary of State, and Pierce's Minister to Great Britain. Because his foreign service kept him out of the bitter domestic disputes leading up to the Civil War, the Democrats felt he would be a more favorable candidate than the current President, Franklin Pierce. Buchanan thought the crisis would disappear if he exercised balance in his appointments and persuaded the people to accept Constitutional Law as interpreted by the Supreme Count. He was wrong.
