Joe Barry's Farm, A Day's Journey to the South of Odanah
Beginning at Odanah just south of Lake Superior, Hölzlhuber and several fur trappers used an Indian trail to travel upstream through extensive wild forest. At the end of the first day they reached the large farm of Joe Barry, a friendly Irishman, who fed them and put them up for the night in one of his old cabins. Barry had more than 50 arable acres, although some trees still stood in the fields, something Hölzlhuber said he saw on farms frequently. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
