Yellow Thunder Monument | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Monument for Yellow Thunder, Chief of the Winnebago tribe. The inscriptions read, "Yellow Thunder, Chief of the Winnebago, born 1774 - died 1874. And his squaw, died 1863 (1868?). Erected by the Sauk County Historical Society and the Twentieth Century Club of Baraboo." Yellow Thunder and his wife were originally buried in the woods about a half mile from this monument, but the bones were re-interred in a sewer pipe enclosed in this cement and stone structure. The inscriptions are carved in sandstone and set into the monument, which stands on the Baraboo-Kilbourn road four miles north of Baraboo Cemetery. The monument was unveiled on August 27, 1909.
