Wilkins 14: Lone Tree and Indian Burial
| An Indian Burial in a tree; Sketched by Wilkins on his 151-day journey from Missouri to California on the Overland Trail (also known as the Oregon Trail). Wilkins writes about this sight in his diary saying: " Passed yesterday an Indian's 'grave' if a corps lying on the top of a tree can be called a grave. On the top of a solitary tree, by the banks of the Platte, was a bed of poles on which lay the corps of an Indian. He was wrapped in a Scarlet Blanket and a Buffaloe Robe. Near him lay his mocassins, spoon and tin cup with some other articles I could not see. A very singular custom of disposing of their dead." |
