Main and Carroll Streets Intersection
Elevated view of the intersection of Main and Carroll Streets, showing the home of Nathaniel Dean (where the Inn on the Park Hotel is now located), and St. Raphael Cathedral before the construction of its 100-foot tall steeple. St. Raphael parish was organized for the Irish who began settling in Madison during the 1840's. Construction on the church began in 1853, with the first mass held in 1857. The church was not fully occupied, however, until 1862. The tower was constructed in 1885. When the diocese of Madison was created in 1946, St. Raphael became the cathedral parish. The lock in the foreground is an advertising sign hanging from a hardware store in the Atwood Block. |
