Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird of Wisconsin (on the far right) with astronaut James Lovell, a former student at the University of Wisconsin, and his wife Marilyn Gerlach Lovell of Milwaukee at the ceremony at which Lovell received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. The medal was presented after the Apollo 8 flight. With them is Admiral Thomas Moorer, later chairman of the joint chiefs.
DESCRIPTION
