Madison's First Car

Madison's First Car | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Mr. and Mrs. Albert G. Zimmerman in their locomobile steamer in 1902. Zimmerman purchased the car in 1901 and claimed it was the first permanent automobile in the capital city. "Prof. Wood had one like it for experimental purposes," he wrote on the back of the photograph,"a month or two before, but he took it away with him to Baltimore that summer." The Zimmermans are seen on the Shorewood rustic bridge, a picturesque highlight of Lake Mendota Drive. The Park and Pleasure Drive created the drive a decade earlier for scenic excursions in horse-drawn vehicles. To prevent trouble with the horses, early autos and carriages used the pleasure drive on different days.
