Carte-de-visite portrait of Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864), American educator and geologist. Hitchcock served as the third president of Amherst College from 1845 to 1854. He ran the first geological survey of Massachusetts and was appointed the Massachusetts State Geologist in 1830. His primary concern, however, was "natural theology," which attempted to reconcile science and religion through geology.  Handwritten inscription at bottom reads, "Edw. Hitchcock. 1869 Amherst."
DESCRIPTION
Carte-de-visite portrait of Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864), American educator and geologist. Hitchcock served as the third president of Amherst College from 1845 to 1854.
