Elias Durand, Botanist
Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Elias Durand (1794-1873), French botanist. Left France and came to America after the downfall of Emperor Napoleon. Established a successful drugstore in Philadelphia. He donated his herbarium, boasting over 10,000 North American flora, to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris in 1868. Handwritten inscription at the bottom reads, "Elias Durand." |
