Text on back reads, "JAPAN, An Insular Empire of Asia, composed of 3,850 islands, the principal of which are Hando and Kio Siu. The Capital City of Tokio [Tokyo] is on the island of Hando at the head of the Bay of Yedo. The inhabitants are of the Mongolian race, are stout and well formed, amiable, intelligent and patriotic. The State Religion has always been Sintoism [Shinto]. The priests are supposed to have descended from the Sun. Japan has a written history for more than twenty-five centuries, and a continuous dynasty since 660 B.C. This picture was taken on the spot and is an exact representation of the native costume. The Singer Manufacturing Co. have offices in all the ports and large cities, and are furnishing the Japanese with thousands of Singer Machines." |
