| Text on back reads, "NETHERLANDS, A maritime kingdom of the Western border of Europe, bounded West and North by the North Sea, East by Prussia, South by Belgium. The country, as the name implies, is low, some parts being 16 feet below the sea level. It is protected from the encroachments of the sea by a system of dykes, some of them as high as sixty feet. Gardening, agriculture, the dairy and cattle-raising have attained of high state of perfection. The inhabitants are Dutch, a branch of of the Germanic race, speak the Dutch language, which is allied to the Platt-Deutsch of North-western Germany and is nearly identical with the Flemish. They are sober, intelligent and industrious. Our photo represents a couple from the Island of Marken, a Province of North Holland in the Zuyder Zee, ten miles from Amsterdam. The Singer Company have over twenty offices here, and sell thousands of machines annually." |
