Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Captain George Henry Preble. Starting in 1861 Preble commanded the gunboat Katahdin, serving with Rear Admiral David Glasgow Farragut on the Mississippi River, participating in the capture of New Orleans and at the Battle of Vicksburg. On July 16, 1862 he was promoted to commander and given command of the steam-sloop Oneida. After the war he remained in the Navy achieving the rank of commodore on November 2, 1871. |
