The original typewritten caption reads: "Wasteful Method of Storing Manure. This is a common scene in many barn yard (sic). Manure is the most valuable asset on the farm. It adds humus to the soil and improves the physical condition and make (sic) it warm, and enables it to retain all moisture. It aids in the development of bacteria. Helps to prevent washing and baking. Improves soil ventilation. Manure is lost by weathering, bleaching and heating and should not be exposed to the weather. If it cannot be spread at once upon the land it should be stored in a manure pit or shed where it will not be exposed to rain."
