Rush Street Bridge before the Chicago Fire
Panoramic view of downtown Chicago before the fire of 1871. The photograph was taken from the South side of the Chicago River, looking Northeast. The Rush Street bridge (a "swing bridge") is in the foreground. On the far side of the river, partially obscured by damage to the original print, is the McCormick Reaper Works. The factory was destroyed in the fire of 1871. The other identified buildings are Oswego Mills Store, Lake House, and Marsh's Caloric Grain Dryer. Lake Michigan appears in the distance. |
