The original typewritten caption reads, "(Two views) Model SL International Motor Truck (one photo shows the truck leaving the garage with newspapers and the other making a delivery). This truck is owned by "The Detroit News," Detroit, Michigan. It averages 43 miles a day on week days and 71 miles on Sunday. This newspaper owns 96 other trucks -- 46 of them are Fords, 13 Reos, 14 Federals, 2 Signals, 1 G.M.C., 2 Dodges, 1 Olds, 1 Packard, and 5 Chevrolets. All these motor trucks operate on regular routes, the International having one of the longest of these. It runs on a few miles of dirt road and some rough pavement. The Detroit News furnish their own bodies and mount them. These bodies are equipped with special cab, tire carrier, and wood bumping device to protect rear of body. The bodies are painted a bright red with silver bronze lettering. The News has its own painting done. Mr. J.T. Webb, Garage Superintendent of the Detroit News says that they keep a record of costs. The International Model SL has only been in operation since the middle of January, and accordingly the figures for this International are not sufficiently clear to give one an accurate record of it. He says he would be glad to provide these data later when more complete records will be available. Under Mr. Webb are six mechanics, one oiler, three washers, and two painters. The unit repair system, Mr. Webb states, is in effect on Fords and Reos. Mr. Rullo, driver of truck No.14, the Model SL International, declared that his machine was the best in the place." |
