Group Portrait of Musical Trio

Group Portrait of Musical Trio | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Ferrotype studio portrait of a musical trio in front of a painted backdrop. One man on the right sits holding a guitar, a man stands in the middle holding a flute, and the man on the left sits holding a violin. The photograph was cropped in the shape of an oval and mounted on a piece of mat board. A typewritten label attached below reads, "Musical group, probably in Milwaukee, Wis., about 1875(?). One of the seated men, (probably the violinist at left) was called 'Papa Hess'. Standing is Anton Kayser who came with his family as a small boy to Sauk City in 1858. At 17, he ran away to enlist and was a Civil War drummer boy and later a cavalryman and eventually "head" of the Grand Army of the Republic organization in Milwaukee with his wife and five children and died there about 1922."
