Hotz immigrated from Wertheim, Germany to Chicago in 1884 and was sponsored by his uncle, Ferdinand Carl Hotz, M.D., an ophthalmologist. Two other uncles, Christof and Christian Hotz were also living in Chicago, and were partners in the Schuttler and Hotz Wagon Company. Ferdinand learned the jeweler's trade working at Juergens and Anderson & Company in Chicago from 1884 to 1887. This cabinet card portrait was loaned for scanning by Hotz's grandson, G. Leonard Apfelbach, M.D. |
