Explanation 1: Named after a geologist, Charles Whittlesey, who surveyed the area 1847-1851. Explanation 2: Some believe it was named after the first legislator to represent the district, Asaph Whittlesey. Others say it was named by the railroad company, from an American Indian word meaning sand-bar.
