Hiram Wright was a newspaperman, lawyer and politician born in St. Lawrence County, NY. He moved to Prairie du Chien in 1846, and published the Prairie du Chien Patriot, the first newspaper in Crawford County and the only newspaper on the upper Mississippi at that time, from 1846 to 1851.

Wright also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1850. He then served for two years as Crawford County judge. As a Democrat, he served as state senator from 1851 to 1852, state assemblyman in 1853 and was elected state superintendent of public instruction which he served in that capacity from January, 1854, until his death.
