Early Life

Jesse Hazen Ames was an educator born Shiocton, Wisconsin. He graduated from the state normal school at Stevens Point and the University of Wisconsin with a Ph.D. in 1907. He served as teacher, principal and superintendent at various Wisconsin schools from 1885 to 1910, and as well as chairman of the history department of River Falls State Normal School from 1910 to 1913.

Career Accomplishment

From 1913 to 1915 he was a representative for the University of Wisconsin extension division and from 1915 to 1917 was supervisor of the training school department at River Falls. He served as president of the River Falls institution from 1917 to 1946. Under his administration a four-year curriculum was instituted in elementary and secondary education, and the title of teacher's college was assumed. Admission and graduation requirements were raised, the acceptance of students below college level was discontinued and the training department for teachers was expanded to include specialized instruction for rural teachers. After his retirement he co-authored several history textbooks with his brother, Merlin M. Ames
