Merlin Mcmain Ames was an educator and author born in Shiocton, Wisconsin. He graduated from Stevens Point Normal School in 1902 and the University of Wisconsin with a PhD in 1908. He was principal of the Hayward schools from 1909 to 1914, and superintendent of the Stanley schools from 1914 to 1916. He served as faculty member Stevens Point Teachers College from 1916 to 1922, and the J. Sterling Morton High School and Junior College in Cicero, Illinois from 1922 to 1945.

He was the author of "Canthook Country" in 1941, "Fork in the Trail" in 1948, and other books and short stories. In collaboration with his brother, Jesse Hazen Ames, he wrote the "American Life History Series" for young readers.
