The 37th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Camp Randall in Madison and mustered into service on April 9, 1864. The regiment left for Washington, D. C., on April 28 (companies A through F, H, and I joined en route at Maryland Heights on May 17).  Its brief war service was spent in and around Washington, D.C., and in Virginia. It participated in the Siege of Petersburg, the Appomattox campaign, and the pursuit of General Lee's army. The regiment mustered out on July 26, 1865. It lost 247 men during service. Seven officers and 149 enlisted men were killed. Two officers and 89 enlisted men died from disease.
