The 1883 Italianate-style Paul Jules Saloon Building in Green Bay's Broadway-Walnut Historic District is among the oldest in the area. Of its two storefronts, one has been occupied by a saloon throughout the district's entire historic period.

Prior to restoration, three-quarters of the building stood empty. Both storefronts were completely boarded over except for one small window. A fake mansard roof from the 1960s blocked what were once transom windows. Even the second-floor windows were blocked down by half. Previous alterations had not attracted many customers.

During the restoration, windows were opened to their original size allowing light to flood the restored interiors. The original hardwood floors and tin ceilings were uncovered. New, large, glass display windows let passersby see the products and services available inside. Sensitive restoration to the storefronts made it clear the building was open for business and they attracted new tenants: a coffeehouse, a salon, an interior design firm, and a marketing communications firm.

This restoration and the resulting new businesses reflected the positive changes in the district. Many were due to the efforts of the Main Street Program, "On Broadway."

The project was creative partnership between the Chamber of Commerce, a local development firm, the original property owner and several local banks. The work qualified for the preservation tax credit.
