On this date Wisconsin Governor Edward Salomon was born in Stroebeck, Prussia. Salomon arrived in Wisconsin in 1849 after earning his degree in mathematics and philosophy from the University of Berlin. He was one of the first governors to hold a college degree. In 1862 he was elected lieutenant governor. He became governor when Louis P. Harvey drowned in 1862, thus serving during the Civil War. He completed his term in 1864. After 1864 he returned to Milwaukee, where he resumed his legal practice. He moved to New York City in 1869, where he became consul for the Prussian government. In 1894 Edward and his wife took permanent residence in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Edward Salomon there died on April 22, 1909 and is the only Wisconsin governor buried outside of the United States. 1862 - Songwriter Carrie Jacobs Bond Born
On this date songwriter Carrie Jacobs Bond was born in Janesville, Wisconsin. As a young child, she learned the piano and could recite songs upon hearing them once. Her most popular songs were "I Love You Truly" (1901) and "A Perfect Day" (1910). She became America's premier popular songwriter despite chronic rheumatism and being a widowed single mother. Facing severe poverty and sickness, Bond by chance met a song publisher in 1900 and began her successful career. 1918 - John L. Gavin Dies
On this date John L. Gavin was killed while leading his company's horses to safety during the drive on Chateau Theirry near Fismes. Gavin was the only soldier from Cottage Grove killed during WWI. He left UW after his sophomore year and enlisted, joining Battery A of the 121st Heavy Field Artillery. He was known to be the unit's best telephone man, repairing lines under extreme conditions in order to keep communication open with the front. The VFW post in Cottage Grove is named for John L. On this date the Green Bay Packers professional football team was founded during a meeting in the editorial rooms of Green Bay Press-Gazette. On this evening, a score or more of young athletes, called together by Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun, gathered in the editorial room on Cherry Street and organized a football team.
