Rare, fragile, and large format items such as bound newspapers may not be photocopied. Most other printed or microform items may be photocopied.

On-Site Copying / Self-Service Copying

In the Archives:

Visitors may use self-service machines to copy most archival material. Cash ($.15) or copy card ($.10) may be used. Copy cards may be purchased from a machine near the Library Circulation Desk (2nd floor).

Additionally, we do allow the use of digital photography in the archives. There is a fee for using a camera and researchers wanting to take photos should bring their own equipment. The fee for camera use is a minimum of $15.00 or $0.07 per image whichever is more. Researchers must sign a photography agreement form before taking any photographs (Photography Agreement, 98 KB, PDF).

In the Library:

Visitors may use self-service machines to copy printed materials and microforms or save images to a flash drive. Copies cost ($.07) from printed materials and ($.25) from microforms. Saving images to a flash drive is free. Copiers do not operate with cash but rather with a copy card, which may be purchased from a machine near the Library Reference Desk.

Note: To purchase a copy card you must use a $1 bill. The Library and Archives can neither break bills nor provide bills in exchange for coins. Staff will be happy to assist you with the copying equipment as necessary.

Microfilm Collection

In 1941 the Society secured funding for an on-site microfilm lab which has operated without interruption ever since and now holds over 120,000 master negatives. Search our catalog of over 12,000 titles to purchase single pages, sections, whole microfilm reels or digital files of directories, newspapers, organizational newsletters, research journals, trade publications and other publications.

See access information and sales service information About Our Microfilm Collection.

Photographs

More than 80,000 photos, drawings, paintings and other materials are available for purchasing and viewing online at Visual Materials in Our Collections.

The Historical Society has millions of images in its collections. We will conduct limited research into our holdings. More extensive research assistance may be possible on a case-by-case basis by contacting the visual archives. Normal turn-around time is approximately two to four weeks, but may be longer.
