This scene of a multiracial work crew removing trees, unloading a dump truck, and jackhammering on Kilbourn Avenue in Milwaukee was painted between 1935 and 1942 by Edwin Bassett Knutesen (1901-1961) as part of the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. The painting was displayed at the offices of the League of Wisconsin Municipalities until 1993, when it was donated to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.
