1983 - Ojibwe Treaties Reaffirmed

On this day in 1983, a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals ruled that the Ojibwe bands of Lake Superior (each a sovereign tribe) legally retained hunting, fishing, and gathering rights, which they had reserved in treaties signed in 1837, 1842, and 1854.
