Sign up for this once-in-a-lifetime experience and journey across the scenic Kettle Moraine countryside aboard a horse-powered covered wagon. Ours is a faithful reproduction of the Prairie Schooners that traveled west across the continent in the 1800s; it was manufactured by Hansen Wheel & Wagon Shop and finished in the traditional colors of prairie schooners.

Know Before You Go & Accessibility

Wade House was constructed conveniently between the cities of Fond du Lac and Sheboygan along a well-used stagecoach trail. This made the beautiful 27-room Greek Revival stagecoach inn a popular resting point for travelers, tourists and businessfolk in the late 19th and early 20th century. Three generations of Wades called the inn home throughout its active operation—beginning with Sylvanus and Betsey Wade, who immigrated from Europe and constructed the inn in 1850. In 1950, the Kohler family and Kohler Foundation purchased Wade House and commissioned its full restoration. After, the site became property of the Wisconsin Historical Society and was opened to the public in 1953.

About the Location

Explore the horse-powered world that existed before planes, cars, and railroads at Wade House. Here the golden era of carriages lives on forever, with historic structures and a state-of-the-art museum highlighting all its wonders. The site features the stagecoach hotel built and owned by Sylvanus and Betsey Wade, the first European settlers of Greenbush. The site is also home to a blacksmith shop, sawmill, and the Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum, which houses Wisconsin’s largest collection of carriages and wagons.
