LST on Saidor Beach
LST (Landing Ship, Tank) on the beach at Saidor, New Guinea (present day Papua New Guinea). Soldiers are unloading vehicles and supplies for the Saidor landing. A bulldozer is on the left and another LST is on the right. Robert Doyle's caption reads: "Few minutes after ships hit rocky beach at Saidor, trucks and jeeps race along beach and into jungle. Big elevator on ship lowers vehicles from top deck to hold. they are then driven out open bow of ship." |

This image was published in the Milwaukee Journal on January 10th, 1944. The image and article appear on page 112 of the clipping book, Anybody Here From Wisconsin?, a reprint of the scrapbook kept by Robert Doyle's mother. Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan. |
