The Bombing of Cezembre Island
View from shoreline of Cezembre Island, just north of Saint-Malo on the north coast of France. It was German-occupied until the Allies mounted an operation to seize the island starting August 21st. A small plume of smoke is coming from the center of the island. The Allies made five trips under a white truce flag before the Germans obtained permission to surrender. They surrendered on Saturday evening, September 2nd. |

Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan. |
