The Bombing of Cezembre Island

Smoke rising from Cezembre Island, just north of Saint-Malo on the north coast of France. The island, which took a tremendous shelling, can barely be seen over the embankment. It was German-occupied until the Allies mounted an operation to seize the island starting August 21st. The Allies made five trips under a white truce flag before the Germans obtained permission to surrender. They surrendered on Saturday evening, September 2nd. Saint-Malo and Dinard were recently liberated from the Germans on August 15th and the citadel in the harbor fell three days later. That may be the source of the rubble and broken material seen in the foreground. |
