At North Island Glenn Curtiss began work that eventually earned him the title "Father of Naval Aviation." During the 1911 season one of his planes successfully landed and took off from a ship. He also began work on a hydroaeroplane that would take off and land on water. Development continued on the hydroaeroplanes during 1912, and as a student at the North Island flying school John Kaminski was able to participate in the experimental work.
