Homestead Act Applicants Waiting in Line
Elevated view looking down at homestead applicants waiting in line for 2-3 days in winter cold before a window in the Marathon County Court House, Dec. 18-21. People came great distances, from all over the country, to apply for tracts of "water reserve" land, much of it with valuable standing pine, in 200,000 acres newly opened for settlement under the Homestead Act. In subsequent contests over legal points and procedure, many were disappointed. |
