Bleriot, in a Model XI Monoplane, was the first man to cross the English Channel by air. His flight on July 25, 1909 - only a few months after Wilbur Wright had triumphantly demonstrated the Wright Flyer to the French - returned the worldwide leadership in aeronautical development to the French. Bleriot's monoplane would eventually become the dominant form for aircraft. |
