Laura was born April 9, 1876 in Milwaukee, the daughter of Amos Appleton Lawrence Smith (1849-1906), a lawyer (attorney for Captain Frederick Pabst), and Frances Louise Brown (1851-1891). On January 29, 1902, Laura married William A. Kaun (1875-1922), a German immigrant, who founded and owned the William Kaun Music Co. in Milwaukee. After William's death Laura became president of the company. She died Februray 15, 1937.
