Political Parties, 1789-1880

The explanation on the chart is as follows:<p>The space at the bottom contains the names of the Congresses. The colors above show the Sessions of each Congress. When the color begins the Session begins; when the color disappears the Session closes. The colors in the central space show, for each Session, the party which had a majority in the Senate; the colors in the bottom space show the party which had a majority in the House. When a House is doubtful the colors show the two rival parties. [See 1st Session of V. Congress.] The colors indicate the parties as in the diagram.<p>From Walter R.
